Every year, Janssen Pharmaceutica fund and organise a seminar for small patient organisations from across Europe. In December 2011, the conference theme was The Possibilities of the Digital Age. I went to Brussels and, alongside two other digital experts: Patrick Nash and Rochelle Dancel, talked about my experience of digital communications.

My presentation focused on the management of a social media presence and community. I explained how to use champions within the organisation; encourage volunteers to promote the work and campaigns of the organisation; the challenges of moderation; the necessity of a framework (e.g. social media guidelines).

The main challenges of small organisations are the lack of resources and deciding where to start. These were addressed in the afternoon. I facilitated a workshop putting into practice the lessons of the morning by developing a social media plan.

I used this opportunity to spend a few days in Brussels and Bruges. I particularly liked walking through the streets of Bruges  where I took the pictures above.
